Notice to Customers: Temporary Discolored Water Following Recent Fire Response
Due to the recent fire in the California Pines District and the significant use of fire hydrants by the fire department, some customers may experience temporary discolored water. This is a common occurrence after large volumes of water are drawn from the distribution system, as increased water flow can stir up naturally occurring mineral sediment inside water mains.
The water remains safe to use, but it may appear yellow, brown, or rusty orange until the sediment settles and the water mains return to normal flow conditions.
If you experience discolored water, we recommend the following:
- Run cold water only from the faucet closest to your water meter or the largest cold-water tap in your home for 5–15 minutes, checking periodically until the water clears.
- Avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear to help prevent sediment from entering your water heater.
- Delay washing white or light-colored laundry until the water is clear to avoid possible staining.
- If you notice reduced water pressure, allow the water to run for a few additional minutes.
- If discoloration persists after flushing, wait a short time and try again later, as the system continues to stabilize.
As water demand returns to normal, the sediment will settle, and water clarity should return to normal. Our crews are monitoring the system and flushing hydrants in affected areas as needed to help restore normal water quality.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to return the system to normal operating conditions. If you continue to experience discolored water after flushing, please contact our customer service for assistance.
